Seed cycling- the natural way of balancing hormones
Hormonal imbalance:
We know human body works on endocrine secretions called hormones. Whether they secrete too much, or release little in the human body, both is referred as “Hormonal imbalance”.This imbalance can be of any type. It can be related to growth (TSH), it can be reproductive (estrogen) (progesterone) etc.

What is seed- cycling?
Seed- cycling is a natural way of balancing your hormones, over the period of time, to bring them back to normal. Female reproductive cycle produces two female hormones estrogen and progesterone, which are further responsible for different hormonal stimulation. In half of the cycle, one goes high and other goes down, in the other half of the cycle, the other goes high and vice versa.
In seed cycling, the cyclers are supposed to take four seeds in their entire cycle. They'll take turns and switch them from first half and in to the second half. In this, you will have to intake these four seeds a tablespoon per day in their grounded form:
1. Flax seeds
2. Pumpkin seeds
3. Sesame seeds
4. Sunflower seeds
How does the seeds benefits in regulating cycle?
The estrogen hormone is the one that controls the cycle before the ovulation. The intake of flax seeds and pumpkin seeds helps in producing estrogen and helps in removing estrogen dominance, if someone has it.
The sesame seeds are rich in zinc and sunflower seeds are rich in vitamin E. The zinc and vitamin E both helps in the production of hormone progesterone, which takes over a female cycle after ovulation.
How to take them?
Women with irregular periods and ovulation problems should start taking the seeds from the first day of their periods. The first day till fourteen day of the cycle, they are supposed to take flax seeds and pumpkin seeds. And then, the next half, they are supposed to take sesame seeds and sunflower seeds. It is advisable to take them in grounded form. From the begining of the periods, they should again switch to the intake of flax seeds and pumkin seeds, later, following by the sesame seeds and sunflower seeds. 1-2 tablespoon of each type of grounded seeds per day should be taken.
Ladies with menopausal problems, can start taking it with the beginning of a lunar phase.
Who can take them?
The women with hormonal imbalance and ovulation problem and older women with menopause problem can also take them. You should seek medical advice if you have any allergies to any of the seeds mentioned.
What is the scientific research behind the seed-cycling?
There is no formal scientific research done to prove this cycle, however, this has helped many women. Since there is no harm in taking these seeds, internet and people with experiences has written a lot about it. People practicing it believes that these seeds simply boost up the estrogen and progesterone, helps balancing the variations in them, as well as androgens.
What can be the other health benefits?
The increased dietary fiber can help boost the metabolism as well can be very helpful with indigestion and excretory issues. Flax and pumkin, both seeds can help in lowering the blood sugar level. Pumpkin seeds were used in old times to treat prostate problems too. Besides lowering the blood sugar, they are loaded with omega-3’s. Pumpkin seeds are high in magnesium. They help with liver and heart issues. Both are excellent dietary fibers.
Sesame seeds also aids in good blood circulation and digestion. Pumpkin seeds also help in preventing the conversion of excess of testosterone. They are also very helpful for women with urinary tract infections. Sunflower seeds are good immunity booster. They are good source of zinc and magnesium. They are packed with vitamin B-complex, which is one of the very essential vitamin for human nervous system to work properly.
There are no such results that show up overnight. It takes consistency and patience for any good result to transpire. Similarly, this cycle will take two to three months to regulate periods and bringing the balance in hormones.
